what is DETAIL?
Detail to me is when you enlarge a certain area of a product in order to see the texture and patterns of the product being observed. In photography you can capture detail by using a small depth of field by using lighting you can high light and discover patterns and texture that would go unseen to the human eye.
jo whaley
Jo Whaley is a photographer who explores detail by using close ups, she focuses on insect to display the texture of the insects. Jo apprentice the Japanese teaching called wabi-sabi which teaches the value of the beauty of decaying objects, but she went to art school where she learnt about the Greek and Roman traditions of art which are the opposite of the of the Japanese teaching. She likes to use both of the techniques in her artwork this is why there are insects in her photographs to show life like the Roman, but the background is a void to represent the Japaneses teaching which help the mind. Jo Whaley is interested in insects as she said "As with all aspects of nature, their colours, structures, a

I like the background because it has a rust effect which enhances the colour of the butterfly as it is a bright. The butterfly is not in the centre of the image this draws your eye to the butterfly. I think the image has been done on Photoshop in order to capture the rust effect as a background and the contrast of colour of the butterfly. By putting the blue on the bottom she has balanced the photo which makes it much more effective. The blue butterfly and the orange background are complementary colours which makes the image stand out.
I like the rainbow affect that the background has, the beetle is more brighter then the background so it stands out more, also it is in the centre which makes it stand out. The smooth background and the rough texture contrast each other. The green beetle and the tones of purple in the background clashes nicely.
I like this image because it shows that insects are as powerful as humans. The moth has a rough texture compared to the model which makes the moth stand out more as the eye is drawn to the detail of the wings. The white moth is a contrast to the black clothing of the model which makes the butterfly stand out. The background is not in focus which draws more attention to the moth.
henry troup
Henry Troup had a passion for photography at a young age where he liked the way that sand captured the movement of water as it left in prints in the sand. It created patterns and texture which he found beautiful. To me he has captured the beauty of nature in his work. He was born on 1924 - 2012. He liked to develop his images in black and white as it highlighted the shadows in his images.
I like this image because it looks like he has changed the sand to make it show the importance of nature that we do not recognise in everyday life as we just walk past it. When I look at this photograph I see an image of a person. The dot of sand is a head and the shape is the body being carried by someone else.
I like this image because he has used lighting to create the shadow, he might have taken the photo in a studio to capture all the light that is required to create the shadow. He has made it black and white to show how simple nature is. The texture of this image is rough which makes it look like it is represented roots of tree tangled up.
phil straus
Phil Straus is a photographer that likes to take close ups of water, sea and rocks to show the beauty of nature in his photographs. He like to use black and white images this is to enhance the shadows on his images more clearly and he focus on texture in his work.
In my opinion the feather shape is the fist thing I notice because it is the only shape that dose not look like the rock. The way the photographer has done this to me makes it look like the feather is a fossil.
mindmap
test shoot 1
I will take pictures of man made and natural objects to capture different textures of objects. I will use a small depth of field to get as much detail as I can from the objects that I focus on. I will take close up of the images to capture as much detail as possible. I am going to work in the style of Henry Troup capturing the textures around school then I will make some of my images black and white to display the detail captured this will help link my work to the inspiration from my research.
WORST photo
This is my worst image as the exposure is too low so the whole image is black and you can not see what I was taking a picture of.
best PHOTO
This is my best image as the depth of field is small so it just focus on the fur of the coat. The exposure is just right the image does not look to bright or to dark. The fur is not neat this make the picture better as it shows texture. The white colour of the background against the fur contrast with the black corner of the image.
I have made this image black and white like Henry Troups work this makes the image stand out more as there are less colours to see in the image making the eye focus on the textures in the image.
Andrew Scrivani
When researching detail I come across images of food, cut open fruit displaying the inside of the fruit showing different colours and texture. The images inspired me to take my next test shoot focusing on fruit as I wanted to capture the detail of the fruit an everyday object that we do not pay attention to but contains a lot of detail.
test shoot 2
For this shoot I will take close up of different types of fruit and vegetables to see the texture that they have. To do this I will need to use a small depth of field to get as much detail from the fruit as I can possibly get. To get the texture I will slice the fruit and vegetables in half , I will be able to have the texture of the inside and of the outside.
worst photo
This is my worst photo as the image is not in focus. I have not set the focus point in the correct place which was meant to be on the front of the cucumber but I like the angle of the image as you can see what it look like inside and outside the cucumber.
best photo
This is my best photo as the pomegranate is in the centre of the photo it catches your eye. I have used a small depth of field to get the pomegranate seeds in focus. The exposure is not right as the photo is to dark. The pomegranate is cut unevenly this is good because it makes it look more natural. I like the composition but the image is too dark so I will use Photoshop to make it brighter.
In this image I have changed the brightness to make it lighter.
editing PROCESS
I have put my leaf background into Photoshop
This is what the pomegranate looks like when I had used the magnetic lasso.
I have changed the hue of the image to make it look more purple and I have lower the saturation to make thew whole image look much darker.
I like this image background as it is dark but is not dull. The background is has a small depth of field so the front of the picture is more in focus. The pomegranate being a square ruins the whole effect of the image it would have been better if it was a circle like the real fruit
I cropped the cucumber so it was round not like the pomegranate which was a square which ruin the whole effect of the image.
I put the cucumber on the background and changed the background to purple.
I made the cucumber a brighter green to make it stand out.
I changed the type of fruit to a tomato as it was more round and bright.
I put the fruit on the tree to make to make it look like berries.
I like the purple background as it makes the red tomatoes stand out more. I like that the tomatoes are in random places this gives the image a more natural look. I like the background blurred this allow the foreground of the image to be more in focus. To improve this image I will make the tomatoes a brighter red so they stand out more. I have changed the colour of the background to relate it to Jo Whaley work.
test shoot 3
For this shoot I will take pictures of butterflies as I was inspired by of Jo Whaley. For this shoot I will use a small depth of field to focus on the butterfly and capture the detail of the wings.
worst PHOTO
I do not like this image as the light is reflected of the glass which ruins the effect of the image. The white balance is off which makes the whole image look yellow which ruins the look of the butterfly
best PHOTO
I like this image because the white balance is right. The image has a small depth of field making the image looks more clear. The image is centred around the butterfly which catches your eye.
editing process
In this image I have use the magnetic lasso to select around the butterfly.
This is when I pasted the butterfly on a black page.
I have use the magnetic lasso this is to get rid of the grey of the image this means that it does not look rough.
This is how I put the model face on Photoshop.
This is the final image that I edited before
This is when I put the butterfly on the model face
This is when I put the one butterfly wing on his face
This is how it look with both butterfly wing on the person face
This is how I changed the colour of the background to make it look more old fashioned.
I like the background of the image as it reminds me of old movies and it makes the blue butterfly stand out more as it contrast with the background. The butterfly is in the centre which makes it stand out more.
Famous PAINTING
I have a lot of famous paintings this is because famous paintings inspired Jo Whaley I have taken the inspiration from these painting. My favourite is a birds nest and insects which show how powerful insects are in the world. This inspired me because you can see a story in all these images. This made me want to create a still life to observe and focus on,to fit with my theme detail.
what I am going to change in the exam
For the shoot in the exam I will keep all the fabric that I am using. I will change the arrangement of objects so that they are in a better place than in the test shoot. I will have a lamp and a reflector so that the lighting is better in the shoot. I will change the flower to be a white stargazer lilies symbolize sympathy for the dead which will have died.I will use Photoshop and add butterfly which will show the cycle of nature. I will take picture of apple and the lilies everyday this is to record the decay of the apple and the lilies over the course of several day then make a time lapse video on windows movie maker.
set 1
set 2
set 3
test time lapse VIDEO
This is the first video I made from this I decided to add a butterfly and make sure that the flowers have the same angles when I edit them in Photoshop also they should have the same contrast.
done in 10 hour exam
In these screenshots you can see what I have done. I have change the contrast, duplicated the layers of the image, move the butterfly in my images and duplicated the whole image.
I was inspired by Jo Whaley who took photos of still life. She is inspired by the Latin word natura mortalis meaning which means dead nature this is shown throughout her work. In my final piece I have shown how flower and fruit decay and insects help this process. This shows the Latin meaning of still life as the nature in the image is dying and nothing you can do to stop them from dying. Some of the images I had to change the contrast as they were to dark or bright to fit in the video.
